Where it stops
Every tool has limits worth knowing before you build on it. These are the ones that change a decision.
- GTM cannot track data the site never exposes. A clean data layer or application event is more reliable than trying to infer business state from the rendered page.
- A tag that fires successfully can still send the wrong value. Technical firing and business correctness are separate things and both need testing.
- Publishing changes affects production measurement immediately, so containers need version discipline and a review process just like code.
- Consent and privacy requirements can constrain when tags are allowed to run; Tag Manager does not remove the need for a consent strategy.

- Do we need Google Tag Manager if we already have GA4?
- Not always, but it becomes useful once measurement involves several events, advertising platforms, consent rules, or recurring changes. GA4 is the analytics destination; GTM is the implementation layer that can keep those changes organized without hard-coding every tag separately.
- Can you clean up an existing GTM container?
- Yes. We inventory what is published, identify duplicate or dead tags, normalize naming, test the events that matter, and remove only after confirming they are not serving another system. Containers tend to accumulate archaeology, so cleanup starts with understanding rather than deleting.
- What makes a GTM setup maintainable?
- A stable data layer, consistent naming, reusable variables, clear ownership, and a small number of deliberate events. The opposite is a trigger for every button label and a dozen tags that each solve the same conversion slightly differently.
